I realise that you can lose weight if you do enough walking, but can you tone up just by walking?

I think so, if you hold yourself upright and feel conscious of your body when you are walking. I try to hold my tummy in when I am walking, and swing my arms - I think it all helps.
Put some extra wieght on your back that you can carry without too much effort and gradually increase it as you get stronger.
