General Anaesthetic and Mental Health

A few years ago I had general anaesthetic for a routine operation, after which I bcame clinically depressed for the first time in my life. I recently heard of a theory that some anaesthetics can trigger latent mental health problems. Has anyone heard of this?

I haven't heard of that, but certainly any operation, the illness or pain before it and the discomfort and debility afterwards can make a person depressed.

An operation is a stressful thing, mentally and physically

Hello there airbolt,
As I have had a Mental Health condition(Bi~Polar) all my life,I have made a study of depression and allied conditions.
I have never heard of depression being brought on by ageneral anaesthetic .
It is more likely that circumstances surrounding the cause of the operation might have triggered it.
Rather than dwell on the cause, try and seek help for the depression itself.

Thanks for answering, everyone.

I've pretty much always felt that my Depression ( also Bi-Polar ) was latent and waiting to be triggered by a major trauma. However, I am looking forward rather than back nowadays and have found that certain things work to stay on top of it. It has taken a chunk out of my life and i'm determined to win control back.
