following someone elses question in health and fitness, what does the above taste like. is it like marmite? or anchovy paste (which i describe as fishy marmite!), or something else?

Had it as a child in the 1940's. It tasted lovely particularly with food rationing ,so very little sweets available. Had it on a spoon and it was like soft toffee. Presume it is still the same.Nothing like marmite or fish paste.
oooh, no, no, no, nothing like marmite or anchovy paste. it's a sweet taste, not savory at all. and not fishy in a strong way, just a subtle smell/taste of the cod liver oil, but mainly the sweet malty taste. like runny malty toffee. very hard to describe.
Cod liver oil also comes in flavours. I've seen orange and cherry flavoured. http://tinyurl.com/4kd9mc
I'd forgotten all about this!
My siblings and I (all ten of us) used to line up each morning for mum to give us our daily spoonful.
As the others have said, it's a lovely sweet, malty taste and it was the same consistency as firmish honey.
I wonder if it's still sold?
