With an already noted enlarged prostate and age nearly 80, an ultra sound scan reports that prostate is indeed enlarged with irregular nodule appearance. What, if anything do you think the GP might advise for this person? He was asked by consultant previously to refer the person to a Urologist but hasn't done. Thanks in advance for your comments/replies.

This question is not as easy as it sounds.
The obvious answer is to see a Urologist who will inevitably advice a biopsy and proceed from there ........whatever the biopsy showed...malignant or benign.

However...if it were me:
If it was me, aged 80, with a poor medical history and a normal PSA ( blood test for prostate cancer) then i would ask the GP to do nothing and repeat the PSA in 4 months. If it was still normal, then monitor the situation, but if it was rising, then ask for a Urological opinion and biopsy.

Discuss this with your GP who will have your PSA results and know your symptoms and will put forward the pros and cons of "doing nothing."

Thanks sqad (this is not for me btw). He did have one PSA test that revealed a little on the high side, the next one not so, but it's the enlargement and now the nodular appearance together with slow-flow urinating that we wonder about. Hopefully GP (who is NOT on the ball most of the time) will call him in to discuss. Thanks again, will let you know if anything is heard.
Thanks.....will follow with interest.
I am 82 and have similar. Enlarged prostate affects urine flow but this does not mean it is cancerous. If prostate feels lumpy or rough it should be checked by urologist b by scan or by hand Finger (up the backside)
PSA test is not 100% reliable. Mine is 9 but is considered OK for my age (82)
It can rise up to very high figures.
