Having recently had shoulder surgery which required Suture Anchors due to the level of injury I recently began wondering, will I set off an airport style metal detector? Anyone got any ideas how to deal with it if I do? BTW I hate flying so probably won't encounter such equipment but do occasionally work in this Country's fine capital city where similar equipment is often employed!

My fake hip always sets off the security thingy ... I offer to show them my scar ...that puts them right off!! Seriously they are used to medical interventions that leave us with metal in us so no problem. You could get a letter from your doctor but I really don't think there will be a problem
I do routinely - 2 hips

despite the staff saying the penetrance of the radiation means that it cant

started with wire rectal sutures ollowing a hemicolectomy
No need for a letter

you wait for it to go blaaaarp
and you say its my hip
and they say no it cant be
and it goes on blaaaarping

and you get thro somehow
Yes, it will set off the airport security alarm.
No big deal, just a matter of "Will you just step aside Sir."
For some reason my OH always sets off the alarm. Now, he goes through with his arms spread out saying "do you want to search me?" The security people always say "no, you're ok". The fact that he's about 18 stone may or may not have something to do with it.
I have heard from friends of friends who work in airports that the alarm goes off randomly, nothing to do with with metal in or on your body.
