Must admit I'd never heard of it, just googled it to see what it's about.
Are you having problems Eccles?

Something is amiss Eth and I wondered if this diet would help.

It is quite drastic though so I'm interested to know how others got on with it.
My son tried it because a doctor recommended it, only - I suspect - because he didn't know what else to suggest to help with chronic fatigue. It didn't work for him, but might be worth trying for someone else and their problem.

Thanks Clover. Did you do the cooking for your son or is he self-sufficient?

How easy was it for you/him to adjust to the diet?
No personal experience but the low FODMAP diet helps people with irritable bowel syndrome.
IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion after investigation such as endoscopy etc.
I wouldn't embark on it without a definite diagnosis.

It is a fairly restricted diet and therefore it is best to get advice from a dietitian.

My other half is on it, he suffers from IBS mainly brought on by wheat and red meat. He has lost a fair bit of weight, his IBS troubles him rarely and he says he feels much better 'in himself'.

Thanks Slaney and Daffy.

My reading so far has been quite interesting and I can certainly see a link.

I'm going to make some adjustments and see what happens.
Sorry to hear this Eccles, maybe this fodmap thing will help...but...don't wait too long if things don't resolve themselves will you, before nipping to see your gp? (said in my best motherly voice)

Thank you Eth, I know you are having your own fun time at the moment, grim isn't it?!?!

This route was suggested by a Gastro chap who knows my level of stubbornness and level of food knowledge so hopefully I can find a way ahead.

I know how to feed myself quite adequately, the rub is when I need to feed Mr Cake and I insist on us eating the same meals even if they disagree with me :-(

I 'cook' (usually microwave) one type of meal for our son, I rarely eat (toast mostly) and oh has lots of raw food. We eat at different times to each other too.

I have IBS and just looking at the list of good foods, there is quite a lot of foods in that list that I react badly with, strange!
If you decide to go for gluten free bread my other half recommends the Sainsbury's branded rolls
http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/groceries/bakery-freefrom/sainsburys-freefrom-soft-multigrain-rolls-x4-300g

or the seeded variety of Genius bread and rolls. Genius can be bought in supermarkets but sells out fast, we order a month's worth at once direct from the manufacturer/baker.

Yes indeed, not much fun at all!
These bowel things, of all kinds, are so individual it's difficult to even know where to start eliminating food. And as you say, cooking for someone else too can make it even more irksome. Most of the time now I just try and do something which we both like but which I can eat with little or no problems.
It can take the pleasure out of cooking though, for anyone who usually enjoys it, like yourself :(
It'll just take a bit of adjusting to Eccles, you're very imaginative and knowledgeable, I'm sure you'll get your head round it and come up with some great ideas :)

Eth, if you are so inclined drop me a line at [email protected]

You need three magic answers to unasked questions and all will be revealed ;-)
Ok :)
I tried it under dietician supervision, referred by gastro, didn't find it made a massive difference though I found initially there were things I didn't even realise were banned that I hadn't realised until reviewing with the dietician. It's quite a ruthless one to stick to. I have IBS but also have other gastro issues too.

I found cow's milk is something I can't have much of, I'm not lactose intolerant (was tested) but the milk itself, I like soya milk though.
Sorry I didn't come back to this thread before. I didn't find it too difficult cooking for him. It's a just a bit awkward using two pans so I could leave onions out of one for him, for example. Otherwise, it's just leaving out certain veg, getting gluten-free pasta and bread. Not too difficult really.
