I am a 61 year old chap, and I noticed the other day that its been years since I last used deodorant...at least 5 and probably more. When I was younger, I went through them by the truck load but not now. In contrast my soon-to-be 15 year old nephew seems to need them rather urgently !

Does any one know the reason for this ? Are my underarms bits not working properly ?

Do you mean I might be hormonal Ummmm ! Flipping heck......not that please !
mikey .....obvious.

Teenagers are trying to pull the birds.......every effort is made.
At the age of 65, you need a deterrent, not a deodorant as the old "broilers" will be throwing themselves at you.

Simple.

Sqad....if only that was true !

Come on now...I am expecting a serious, many years at Medical School type of answer from you, of all people.
mikey........always look for the obvious....as it is usually the answer.

What more can I say?
Probably been killed off by the truckloads of deodorant.
Mikey as we become older our skin alters and as a result of that the sweat glands are less active, but there are other benefits too.

Deodorants are often used as a perfume, best BO prevention is a good wash really.

Antiperspirants are a different thing if someone has a problem.
As your age changes, so does the chemical composition of the sweat. The older you are, the less smell is created when bacteria break down the fatty acids because there is less of them and they are different chemically.
(That's my theory, anyway!)

mamy...a sensible answer at last ! I have checked your link out but only one out of three isn't very good. I do have much less colds than I used to have but most of my teeth are made out of plastic and my memory is going, so I can't recall when I had sex last.

Its not that I don't sweat, although I don't as much as I used to but it doesn't even smell of good old fashioned sweat, let alone horridly.
As you get older the sweat changes in composition...the sweat glands are less active.........b@lls.

mamy has got it in one........poor hygiene, you don't bath or shower regularly. it is that simple.......old or young, if your hygiene is poor..............you will SMELL.
mikey....the sensible answers are not necessarily the correct ones........;-)
Maybe you've lost your sense of smell.........
Another reason could be because older people aren`t as active (doing sports etc) as younger people so they just don`t sweat so much.
Maybe it's you sense of smell that is not working properly, Mikey!
Craft, you weren't there when I wrote my post!
The answer was that you never needed them but were swayed by advertising folk telling you no one around you will like you if your smelt, and you don't know for sure, so be sure and buy our product. Fear sells well.
mikey I had to stop using deoderant about 10 years ago because all of them made me itch like fire, including the hypoallergenic ones and the natural crystal type. I shower daily and use talc and don't think anyone notices, I do have a very honest family member who i check with.
I have noticed that since giving up full time pressured work I don't sweat as much, and so don't need to apply precautionary chemicals at the start of every day.
I agree absolutely with points made about others about sense of smell deteriorating with age - dealt with several elders who have gone whiffy through recycling clothes / not washing, and desperate not to go the same way.
OH (an older gentleman) bathes scrupulously but has occasional armpit issues, for which I have found 'Trust' cream works fine.
