Ive recently had blood tests and one of them has come back with my cholestrol being raised, and I am due to go and discuss with doctor next week, but I am baffled as to why it is raised at all.
I have been following a very healthy eating plan for ages now, and everything on the list to avoid foodwise, well I dont eat any of it! Im eating tons of veg, fruit, lean meat and fish, potato and pasts with no butter etc.

Cant see what they can suggest for me to change in order to lower it. Any ideas??

Non, no ideas at all about changing ANYTHING.

You may have a high cholesterol because.....you have a high cholesterol and the word of the moment is "of genetic origin."......you were born that way.

There are other causes......underactive thyroid, diabetes and one or two other uncommon conditions.

Don't get worked up....there are plenty of people in their 90's with raised blood cholesterol.
Smow, I had blood results yesterday and I was told I had high good cholesterol and low bad cholesterol. I didn't want to come accross as a muppet by not having a clue if that was good or bad!
Did they mention whether it was good or bad cholesterol in your case?

Some folk are just inclined to get higher readings than others. Probably all in the genes. One can eat etc. to minimise the reading but the range will probably remain your range.

Hmm I wish I knew the secret of not getting worked up. I'm sure my teeth would have benefited from that knowledge.
vodka.......I think Smow is talking about a total cholesterol reading.

Your results vodka, were very good.
Thanks sqad xx

Smow, if you are eating healthily then I wouldn't worry too much. The doc may prescribe you a tablet to take. Have you any of the other symptoms sqad mentioned? xx
Coffee increases cholesterol - even if you sweeten it. Cholesterol levels aren't only affected by food, your own body produces it.
It could be hereditary, I eat healthily and my cholesterol was 7.7. On statins now.

Hi guys, I should have added that it was raised compared to previous blood tests. Dont know about good or bad cholestrol - will ask when i go and see the doctor. I do have an underactive thyriod and take medication for that. Dont drink coffee.
Perhaps start eating those yoghurts that claim to reduce cholesterol levels.

Do you know who makes them Hopkirk?
\\\ I do have an underactive thyriod and take medication for that.\\\

That could be your answer.........ask GP for a TSH (blood test for thyroid)
Flora and Benecol are two that I know of, but no doubt there are others.

I had high cholesterol and tried various statins but the side effects were so horrendous I had to stop taking them.
I eat a very good diet.
Once I stopped taking the statins I started having a bowl of porridge every morning and take 75mg aspirin daily.
Two weeks ago my cholesterol reading was down to 4.
I was diagnosed with familial hypocholestrolaemia (FH) and a reading of about 11 some years ago - completely changed my diet, started taking statins and now reading vary between 5.1 and 6.1. Blood pressure on the lower end of good - doc happy with that.
