why has my friend been told that she is only allowed to eat digestives and no other biscuits since she has diabetes? I have been diabetic for 35yrs and have never been told that, I eat any biscuits that I fancy if my blood sugar is low and can't see the point of why she has been told this.

In my opinion, that is total nonsense and verging on the "hysterical."

Of course she can have biscuits, digestive or otherwise.......a biscuit with her coffee or tea is perfectly acceptable....as long as she doesn't have a second biscuit or indeed the whole packet.
I think that your friend may be getting a bit confused about what she has been told. My Mum is diabetic and she used to have a couple of Rich Tea biscuits if she felt her sugar levels dropping, but was told that digestive biscuits are better than the rich tea, can't remember exactly why or what the reasoning was behind this, but certainly there was no suggestion to exclude any other biscuits.
My MIL was told that a couple of Rich Tea were OK, but to swerve from the biccy's otherwise.

(I don't think she listened. A bit like telling the cat not to scratch the sofa)

thanks squad, thats just what I thought, maybe some nurse like the one who gave my poor 83yr old sister the idea that if her blood sugar went above 6mmo?l she would lose her legs, scared her half to death poor soul.
Digestives have a lot more fibre in them than, say, a custard cream or rich tea, and are therefore slow release carbs, which are said to be better for diabetics as they help maintain a steady blood sugar level.
I've never heard of anyone being told they're the only biscuits they can eat though. Anything in moderation.
I have to inject 4 times a day" and see my diabetic consultant 6 monthly.
having been diabetic for more years than I can recall I have always been told eat digestives, as the small amount of sugar dose not stick to the blood corpuscles hence i maintain good bm's
I'm diabetic and I think ethandron sums up the situation by saying, 'Anything in moderation'

......Well, almost anything!
Digestives are HIGH in sugar

thank you all for some very interesting answers, what it boils down to then is common sense and moderation as ethandron says, but I must confess that if I am silly enough to let my bloodsugar fall too low, I will eat and eat and eat till someone takes the biccy tin away, although it does not happen very often now I have got older and slower.
