It looks like i need an operation on my ankle to repair some damaged cartilage & to get to the damaged area the surgeon needs to break my ankle.

Does anybody have any idea on how long it would take to recovery from something like this?

I think that you have either misheard what he has said OR misconstrued what he said.

How long is a piece of string?

I will assume that your are not having arthroscopic removal of cartilage and in which case, you will be in a plaster cast for about 2 weeks and than a walking boot for about another month.

I do not know what your occupation is, so i cannot comment on the time you will be likely to return to work.

Hope this is helpful.
I remember doing the ligaments in my ankle whilst playing football (badly), and being taken to casualty in the hospital I worked in. After examining me briefly the doctor said "You'd have been better breaking it". It was a slow process and I didn't play again for about 4/5 months.
Same here Duncer, it was bloody agony.
