It's probably just a coincidence. (I've been short-sighted since early childhood but my ability to see things close-up became noticeable over a very short space of time, as I approached the age of 50. Despite always having had blood-sugar levels which are 'all over the place', I'm not diabetic).
Your optician should be told that you're diabetic as he/she will then be looking for any problems which might stem from your diabetes (rather than from the drug you're taking to treat it):
