Hi I have just see an advert for a ( zumba type ) workout - I wont say who or where because that's not fair - so opinions please

They claim the workout will burn 1000 calories in an hour ( I think this is rubbish but know nothing about calories ) apart from that it could be more than half you daily allowance!! And I attend Zumba classes and I think I " Zumba like mad " for the whole hour session and only burn a couple of hundred ( if that )

They also state the workout music is to pop music - well I'm sorry but doesn't it cosy a LOT of money to buy the rights to use music on a commercial basis - I know you have to have a performance licence and pay a royalties licence just to play music in a public place let alone use it to make money from !!

So over to the experts please - what's your take on what's going on here ??

There is now way on earth that Zumba burns 1000 calories an hour. Ive done it myself. It is good excercise and good fun but it burns less than half of that

Looks like it is possible lyndy, here are a few sports that can burn that amount if calories, it will take a bit of determination though.

As to the music, most classes use it so it would be no different.
This looks useful.

Also, I think the music is modified and the the Zumba instructors have to pay a license fee to play it in their classes.

Not according to that calculator on Chatty's link, it looks like it's all dependant on your weight and intensity of the class. ie the fatter you are the more you burn.

The clue is that it 'can'...not that it 'will'.Too many variables.

Sorry Folks - the class is NOT Zumba - its a take off and a cheap one at that - it is run by a local lady who is copying the zumba format ( just to make things clear I do zumba classes I love them they are my passion and I know the zumba music is written especially ) - I am just feeling sorry for the girls who will be sucked in to this "take off" both the class users and the girls who will train to be instructors - only to be disappointed when the powers to be shut them down so I thought I would find out if the lady that " invented this take off" is on dodgy ground ( don't get me wrong if she isn't good luck to her )
There is a gym near me (part of a chain) that claims their workout 'can burn 500 calories in their 30 minute workout'. Every time they try to stop me to encourage me to join up, I tell them its false advertising.

Thanks Dive girls - I never thought of the larger people - of course they will lose more and quicker if they exersice throughout the whole thing. - and thanks rockyracoon yes I guess that fanatical sports people can do it -- I will look at the link - but I heard that a marathon runner doing 26 miles in 2hours 5 mins burned 100 calories a mile so simply put that's 2600 in 2hours 5minutes half that in for 1 hour ????? and that is just over this lady's claim - Bonkers
anyway thanks guys for the info

Excellent Puzzled 54 - I feel it is our duty to stop this hype because there are a lot of people desperate to have something work for them - and looking at the above answer I just posted ( re the marathon runner ) most of us would end up in hospital if we tried to beast ourselves like that Lol
