Tonging thick hair

I have fairly long thick heavy hair
I want to use tongs on it next week for curls but feel I need something to hold the curls - what can I spray on each individual tress before tonging to hold the curl

I just used to use a mega hold hairspray, spray each tress lightly then use the tongs whilst it is still wet from the spray.

Doesnt the spray stick your hairy to the tongs
No. We had our hair done for one of my daughters wedding and the stylist just used hairspray on each ringlet. My other daughter has really tight curls and the stylist just tonged and sprayed was brilliant and didn't stick to tongs.
I find when I curl my long hair, and spray the curls afterwards, they don't hold, they drop really quickly..
So, is it best to actually spray before you curl?
Make sure you hair hasn't been washed for at least a day. then comb each section out, give it a good spray of some pretty strong hairspray and then tongue. WOrks for me everytime.
Ooooh, I have to wash my hair, Barmaid!
I couldn't leave it a day if I was to be getting myself ready and going out.. That to me would be like going out without washing my face or showering! lol
trouble is Loobie, that hair styles better if it hasn't been washed that day!

Thank you for all your help
I think I will wash it very early and leave it a couple of hours then spray and curl
Then the day after I will get it all cut off
