A book called Of Darkness and Light by Barry Graham. It's just a thin book which I read in a couple of hours, but they were the scariest couple of hours of my life. Basically it's about the Bogey Man, but it's written in such a way that it could be true. Terrifying!!!!!

Have you read Gerald's Game by Stephen King? Not exactly scary but the suspense in it is excrutiating.
anything by Steve Harris, horror/thriller writer, he's from basingstoke so his books have a really good english feel about them as opposed to stephen king or dean koontz, i dont think he's writing anymore after his last book was refused to be published by his publishers
'Pet Cemetery' by Stephen King; 'It' also by Stephen King. Both read many years ago, and have never revisited them. The clown in 'It' was memorable, very scared of drains, toilets etc for a long time!! The TV series was not as scary, but the actor who played the clown was good. As I am writing this those memories flood back.
Anything by Barbara Erskine. I thought I liked the spookiness and flashbacks at first, but after I'd read a couple of books, I found it hard to sleep. I haven't read any more. I don't like horror stories. The horror films which used to be on tv on a Friday night used to scare me rigid.
Definitely agree re The Bible.
The Koran has some pretty good hellfire, can be quite worrying as you read what's in store for those who fail the tests, and various torments encountered en route.
Kafka's The Metamorphosis. I read it when I was really young and was haunted by it.
Agreed also re the Koran, but I haven't really read it in sufficient depth to comment meaningfully on it...
Peter James - Sweet heart and Twilight.
Agree re Kafka.
Books of Blood by Clive Barker - esp the story 'In The Hills, The Cities' - that didn't scare me whilst reading it but gave me nightmares for months!
Boxtops, I agree - although I do think Barbara Erskine's books get a bit 'samey' after the first few. I read House of Echoes whilst sitting under in palm tree in Kenya in over 100 degrees - and I had goosebumps!!

As for the bible and the Koran - there you have horror stories!!
The Exorcist- William Peter Blatty. Far superior to the film. Read it when I was about 13.
Scared the s**t out of me!
Whickerman, there's something really haunting about that story isn't there? It's over 20 years since I read it and I just got goosepimples reading your post!
The Woman in Black by Susan Hill...absolutely terrifying....and just when you think you're safe.....aaaargh
Books don't scare me and neither do films, very much. However, in my twenties I read 'The Amityville Horrow'. I have never been so scared by a book in my life - I've never picked it up since and I don't intend to.
Domain by James Herbert - he did his research well and it was very scary.......
I agree with Boo's suggestion of Gerald's Game - the suspense is awful and it'll make you to NEVER want to wear handcuffs EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
