stephen duck (poet)

I am doing some research into the life of stephen duck an 18th century poet and am intrigued by a reference to TUBAL CAIN in a poem entitled " on several occasions". Does this indicate that perhaps he was either acquainted with freemasonry or was actually a mason. many thanks in advance. Z

Hello there Mr Beeblebrox(I met Douglas Adams once).

This is from Wikipedia:~

This is from the Literary Encyclopaedia:~

This what he looked like:~

I have looked through several list of Famous Freemasons(two issued by the Freemasons themselves) and can find no mention of Stephen Duc.However,as being a Freemason was (for hundreds of years) a proscribed(illegal as such) activity that may not be unusual.
Many Lodges do not have records much before the mid 1800's(if that).
He may have been aware of Masonic pratices given the circle that he moved in.However, given that most sources refer to him as "Religious" I don't think he would have been a Mason, although of course the two are not mutually exclusive.
As he was quite close to Queen Caroline I think he would not have become a Mason,OR would have hidden it carefully?
There is also of course the mystery(?) of his death by drowning, how does that fit into your question.

many many thanks in a pickle. Suspect you are probably right about the lack of a masonic connection. I Was under the impression that the balance of his mind was probably somewhat disturbed after his third wife pre-deceased him, which is why he threw himself into the thames at reading. Either that or he re-read some of his earlier works!!
