Please Help

I posted this before I got a couple a comments but none of them were the book that I was looking for...Please try to help again. I read this book about this boy and his shadow. His shadow was pretty much his side kick and helped him fight. I believe his dad was like the king. And It had to do with some ring that had special powers. I don't remember a whole lot about it . I know it was a fantasy novel and that it was a three book series. Thanks

OK - How about Dragonfire by Karleen Bradford? It's got the boy, the kingdom, the fighting. The shadow here is Jungian... see:
