(11:36 on Mon 23/Oct/06) Apparently 'ballerina' is Italian for 'dancer', so is not necessarily gender specific, as far as I remember

(11:38 on Mon 23/Oct/06) - forgot to add this! 'Danseur' is the French word for male ballet dancer, also 'balletomane' can be applied.

(15:57 on Mon 23/Oct/06) Ballerina is the feminine form of the Italian word for dancer. Therefore it would not be incorrect to use the masculine form ballerino for a male dancer.

(17:44 on Mon 23/Oct/06) Having several male ballet dancers as friends,I can state that kempie(as ever) is correct.
In Italian words ending in A apply to the female, and words ending in O to the male.
eg:~ Bambina(Baby Girl) Bambino(Baby Boy)
So a ballerina can only be female,as kempie says.
Balletomane is French for an avid follower of Ballet(like me!)

(14:02 on Tue 24/Oct/06) Technically the male equivalent of a ballerina would be a ballerino but the term is hardly ever used. In ballet circles they are called male dancers, the Kirov ballet website lists them as the Kirov male dancers and Rudolf Nuryev was known as a male dancer.
