Is anybody else on AB fed up with the increase of Americanisations into the English language ?
My pet hate at the moment is : "Can I get ......." rather than "Can I please have......". I was in a queue for some coffee a couple of days ago when a lady asked fora hot chocolate as follows : "Can I get a luxury hot chocolate and can I also get no marshmallows". Drives me mad !! (But then I have been called an old curmudgeon !)

Yes, "can I get...." drives me mad too. I work in an amusement arcade, and people say "Can I get a pound of twos? " no you can't, I want to say, I'll get them for you because that's my job. You can't come and get them.

No doesn't bother me at all!
I may notice certain expressions but they don't wind me up , too much else going on to bother me much.
Oddly a similar thing happened to me in a coffee shop yesterday when I was toughing base with a friend
I'll have a "Raincheck" really narks me.!!
Isn't Americanisation itself an Americanisation? I certainly loathe Can I get? I also dislike 'filling out' forms, I fill them in. I suppose that makes me an old curmudgeon too then, we need to ensure we're not a persecuted minority.
Talbot, how do you tough base?
Then there are things being run up flagpoles, blue sky, see if it will fly, think out of box ....................... the list is endless.

Everhelpful

Oh yes, for sure.
No, doesn't bother me as the object of a language is communication, but what DOES bother me is people, particularly on AB who use, obscure or rarely used words, which to me mind, is a reflection on their supposed enhanced intellectual status.

Easy ...

Sink a skinful on a Saturday night then post on the internet Sunday morning.
Talbot,"For sure","Absolutely".
"Enhanced", derived from an old French word circa 1350. (that doesn't mean ten to two)
