Name of novel - bus crashes military man tracks down passengers

i am trying to find the name of a novel i read some years ago
plot is
military man is sent to investigate a remote bus crash. he is asked to track down
the passengers. there is no list but he manages to get a lead from each one to the next. but then he finds they are being killed because they have seen
something they should n't. (I think a spaceship/alien) the government is killing them to hush it up and he is then in fear for his own life. his ex wife is called susan and she is married to another military man/politician who i think is bad.
any help on name/author would be great thanks
