Feel a bit "iffy" posting on R&S after reading naomis post re: sad passing of an ABer so please forgive me.

Just wanted to get your take on the teachings of Jesus as recorded in the gospels. Ive read the gospels, and the teachings of Jesus dont really give me anything to shout about. In fact I actually find them quiet absurd and dont know anyone who actually lives by them. A few examples....

"Turn the other cheek".... would you honestly invite someone to hit you again after receiving a black eye? Would you tell your child that if a school bully wallops them to turn the other cheek and get another wallop? Seriously?

"Believers can walk on snakes and scorpions and not be harmed"...not testing God here, just asking to see the credentials of a true believer. Ive got a friend who keeps snakes but 'believers' seem to shy away from exposing their feet to them.

"sell all you have and give to the poor"....I know 'believers' who have an awful lot of money while im struggling with bedroom tax and benefit reforms. In comparason im poor but they still go on cruises and buy nice cars..

"Dont plan for tomorrow and dont save for the future"....so no pension schemes, mortgages, or bank accounts?

"if someone steals from you dont try to get it back"....so if I nick your purse you'll forgive me and I can get to keep the contents?

"if someone wants your tunic then you should give him your cloak as well"....To the bible believers on here, im asking you to give me your T.V. And based on the TEACHINGS of Jesus, I expect you to throw in your DVD player as well.

(bible quotes available on request! However if you have to ask for chapter and verse it just goes to show that you dont know your bible...)

I always found it odd that his family thought him quite mad.
John 13: 34-35 says it all.
Yes,Sandy, pity there wasn't more love in the world...
For someone who can get themselves hung on a cross and simply get up and walk away from their tomb a few days later, I'd imagine they might find a smite on the cheek somewhat amusing . . . although perhaps not to the point of casting them into a pit of fire to burn forever!
It would be nice if it worked nailit, but it quite obviously doesn't. My father said once that he reckoned Jesus was the first man to try to introduce Communism! Well, we can see what happened to that. It didn't work then and it doesn't work now.
Karl Marx envisioned a classless, cashless society.

Societies who implemented his ideas certainly ended up with no class and no cash.
Bible has nothing much to do with Jesus (pbuh) but more to do with people who wrote these books.
Keyplus, Just as well for you they did write it - otherwise the Koran would be even shorter than it is now. ;o)

Beso, I like that.

The Bible clearly identifies Jesus as “a great light,” “the light of the world.” (John 8:12) Yet, relatively few followed him when he was on earth. The same today.

So of these Jesus says: Then the disciples came and said to him: “Do you know that the Pharisees were stumbled at hearing what you said?” 13 In reply he said: “Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted. 14 Let them be. Blind guides is what they are. If, then, a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.

Jehovah’s Witnesses do not expect everyone to speak favorably of them. They bear in mind Jesus’ words: “Woe, whenever all men speak well of you, for things like these are what their forefathers did to the false prophets.” (Luke 6:26) So simple for some.

Goodlife, why do you think Jesus' own family thought he was potty? They must have known who he was. Well, at least his mother and Joseph must have known he'd be a bit different from the rest.
keyplus //Bible has nothing much to do with Jesus (pbuh) but more to do with people who wrote these books.//

Quite right keyplus ! Jesus himself didn't write anything ! He was illiterate as were most people at that time . No one who may have known him ( for 2/3 years ) wrote about him. There are no contemporary Roman or Jewish records of him . It was not until 30 to 70 + years after his death that a few unknown foreigners wrote various hearsay fantasy versions about his very short ministry.
On the subject of walking on snakes, have a look at these daft twits, in America of course !

I (unusually) agree with keyplus yet again. The old testament is just a potted history of the Jews mixed up with folklore and overlain with racism and bigotry. The new testament is a cynical attempt to rewrite history in support of a fledgling cult/religion. None of it written by a deity.
Naomi - Quran was complete in the life of Prophet. It was not in book form but was written on different things and more importantly was memorised by heart by many word to word and that system has not been broken since then. I can take you to "your" local masjid and someone will recite you whole Quran from A to Z without even looking at it. Today there are millions of people who can recite you Quran without the need to look at it and without any mistake. You have no knowledge about the history of Quran apart from whatever you read on few anti-Islamic or Atheistis websites. And you do not have common sense either.

Had that been the case with Bible then today Bible would not be "according to Michael" and according to John" etc. Bring me one Bible that says according to Jesus (pbuh) and I would believe in its every single word before any Christian would do so.

//according to Michael//??
Must have missed that gospel.
keyplus just because somebody can recite the koran from A to Z doesn't make it true, so what are you trying to prove?
Keyplus, have you ever heard of 'chinese whispers' if not look it up.

The Gospel of Michael was one of the Very Lost Gospels along with the Gospels of Tom, Dick and Harry.

Once the idea that one's every thought could be attributed to a higher consciousness instead of one's own prejudices, everyone stated writing them.
/I always found it odd that his family thought him quite mad./

Well, they must have known him better than most ..
Yet the mad race has continued to accelerate. MAD indeed, since those initials stand for Mutually Assured Destruction, the shaky concept on which you lot put your hope on the superpowers balance their so-called peace. This surely is not peace from God.
