What is the most obscene art ever created that caused huge controversy to date?

The one that most stands out for me was the Damien Hirst work where he cut a cow in half. That seemed to make the public sit up and notice.

I remember someone displaying a tank in which live lobsters were electrocuted, and calling it 'art'.

It made the papers because Spike Milligan smashed a window as a mark of protest.

Manet caused a stir way back, but the statue in Trafalgar Square of the naked, pregnant and disabled woman kicked off a huge fuss. Sorry can't remember her name.

I remember a huge portrait of Myra Hindley, made from the handprints of children, causing quite a stir.

This question is a minefield - What is art and what is obscene.

Art gets away with most things but as in most things beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

So all I can offer is an opinion so:

Thing that most outraged me: The Myra Hindly painting done with childrens hand prints.

Obscene wast of money - The submarine made out of old tyres or the oblong of bricks or Tracy Emines bed.

Most obscene publicity art - Hirsts cow.

What is considered obscene varies and with time tends to fade.

But Vivienne Westwood's Cowboys T-shirt actually led to a prosecution under the obscenity act - was it art? would there have been a prosecution if it had been on a canvas and not a T shirt?

If you include Lierature as Art,the Lady Chatterley's Lover certainly ranks high.It was not printed in the UK till 1960Original publication 1938) see here:~

and then,it was prosecuted in the UK for Obscenity, but was vindicated.
The Judge said to the Jury"Is this a book you would want your family or SERVANTS,to see?"Of course the Jury was made up of ordinary folk, who had never had servants, and so they rather went against the Judge's wiews!
