According to this page of the Lakeland Website, they CAN be used on the hob,but you must use a heat diffuser:~
http://www.lakeland.co.uk/product.aspx/kitchen ideas/servingdishes!7184?src=gapap&sq=tagine

This site has Tagines that can be used eith on the hob or in the oven:~
http://www.maroque.co.uk/catalog.aspx?p=00423

Most Tagines are earthenware(a type of pottery) which Is why the heat diffuser is necessary on the hob.

This site:~http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tajine
will tell you more about the Tgine.
If you buy a Tagine just make sure it's hob or oven because most can't be used for both.

Bon Appetit!
