chipboard is quite porous I think, if you use polyurethane boat varnish it shouldnt take too many coats, how many will remain to be seen
just dont use a cheap own brand one which might sink right into the chipboard and swell it up

im no expert suna, it may not, Im just a DIY'er but i never buy cheap paint or varnish cos you just need to use even more of the stuff therefore its not cheaper in the long runand twice the work
