Genes Reunited provide this service for people with genealogy queries. I receive an email and have to log onto their site to view it and reply. At no time is either party aware of the other's email address.

I must have seen it somewhere before Craft, just came to me when I was going through Mrs-o's announcement thread, might stop all this nonsense
Or they could reinstate the PM service.
A PM system would cover this better than Gnome-carrier :)

Stop stealing my ideas :-)

Like i said, i hadn't really thought it through, just put it out there while it was fresh on my mind
There's no need for any of this. All that is required is to use one of the many temporary email address provider: http://
The address will be live for only a few minutes... |
And if the person doesn't see the email in time?
Question Author
That's a great link Mark
now see ive always loved the PM idea, until I became a mod. Now the wuss in me would be worried i'd get an irate ABer giving me grief if I suspended/banned a user or thread.
Suppose it could be an opt out or opt in facility? |
I'm absolutely certain that personal messaging would be abused if brought back. The great and the good would use it as another mechanism for cyber-bullying...
unless it was an opt in or opt out option like i suggested Mark?
How would it be used for cyber bullying?

Surely the throwaway e-mails are ok, especially the very short lived ones? Just ignore any unwanted mails (if they do occur) as if they were never received.
if you posted an address on AB, and it had produced the required result, you could always report the post for deletion.
Question Author
you could jno, but in that time, you're e-mail is there.
I also think, if you're thinking of posting personal e-mails (regardless of site rules) there should be a disclaimer type warning over chatterbank and MarkRae's link |
But how do they get the email address in the first place if someone does not give it to them. For instance, is my email address there for all the world to see? Not so anonymous then?
but aren't throwaway addresses designed to be just that? single use then you just never check them again.
I've been lucky with nice AB'ers. I've posted a throwaway (the same one a few times) and have been lucky enough to have made friends and received a wonderful parcel from a delightful AB'er.

''I've posted a throwaway (the same one a few times)''
That's not a throwaway email address then is it. As woofgang says above: create, use once. |
