Our moggy...a neutered tom, has suddenly started disappearing for days on end. He went missing for 2 weeks last year so we removed his nuts (via the vet !!!) and he calmed down.

Now, he's started going off again (he's still nut-less !!!). He's just come in after being away for almost a week and gone straight for his food. He seems as healthy as before but this is really starting to upset my 12 year old daughter who treats the cat like it's her own baby....they go everywhere together.

Is it mating season....is he still getting "urges" ? Any suggestions for his behaviour ?

many thanks

Er, you don't live a couple of doors along the road from me, do you?

The moggy from that house has discovered that my front door has got a cat flap (whereas his own front door hasn't). Further, he's worked out that a simple miaow from him will get me to open yet another tin of cat food. So his official 'owners' probably don't see him for days on end. (He seems to spend most of his time asleep on my settee, asleep on top of my wardrobe or - like this afternoon - knocking all of the ornaments off my dresser).

However if I'm way from my house for any length of time (so there's no one to feed him), he'll then remember where his other home is, and return there for a brief period.

Your feline friend is simply getting fed somewhere else but returning to you when the alternative supply of food isn't available. The only way to get him back (other than locking him in) is to install a cat flap - if you've not already got one - and to ensure that he has constant access to his favourite food (and, of course, to fresh water).

Dogs are loyal to people. Cats are only loyal to their stomachs ;-)

i agree with Chris.
The weather is cooling and your cat has just found some other people who either have a cat flap or a soft heart and are feeding him

One of my cats left for almost a year once. I honestly thought he was dead. Then one day he walked in bold as brass as if he'd never been away
Dont want to worry you but my girl cat did the same thing. Went walk about for weeks on end and always came home starving so its not as if she was being fed elsewhere. Sadly she has been gone for over two months now and I dont think she is coming home again. Im very upset about it but what to do. Have been up and down bothering the neighbours and spca but no luck. I do hope your cat settles down hammerman.
He's proberly fallen out with you for taking his nuts away!
My friend`s neutered tom does that. She got him and his mother from a rescue place in April and he`s started going off for a few days every now and again. He always comes back though. The only reason she can think of is that although he`s been neutered, he still has the mating instinct to go wandering (a bit like a well fed cat still catching wild animals)
Have you got anything on him like a disc with your phone number?

I rescued a neutered tom and he loved to wander, albeit he would come back far more often, just appear via the cat flap.

I had a disc specially engraved for him with my phone number on and used to get numerous calls and texts about his whereabouts from all his "friends" and the local hotel/bar as he would follow guests in. Apparantly he used to almost knock on one lady's patio door to ask to be let in and there were sightings of him curled up happily on someone's bed after they left their ground floor bedroom window open! I had to go and extract him from another "friend's" bed once, everyone would seem so concerned in case he was lost and I would get tales of him having been given cream and tuna, no wonder he'd go back!

One day I had a load of missed calls and rang back to speak to another of his "friends" who had found him on the side of the road, having been hit by a car. I was distraught in a taxi on the way home when I had another call from another of his "friends" to say they had taken him to their place and to come to them.

I was greeted by a huge hug and they had wrapped him up in a sheet for me (forever grateful to them as it would have destroyed me to have to go and find him on the road) and we had tears and stories - had never met them before but they knew my cat well) and found out things about his wanderings I'd never known like how he used to frequent the local beer garden and have hotel staff trying to chase him when he would make a sneaky attempt on getting into the kitchen.

It meant a lot to me that I could keep tabs on where he was and that he was safe and, even in the end, he had people looking out for him. I do wonder about his former life as it's not a surprise that he ended up as a stray in a cats home.

Might be worth a try putting your number on him.

Jenna - HC did a lot of living in a short life. Cats are comical and frustrating animals.

hammerman - have you thought of putting a note of sorts on the cat and see if you can find out if he has another home? It must be hard watching your daughter get upset over a randy wandering fleabag tom. I have to admit my de-nutted tom is just like a big kitten and seems to have lost his natural urges. This is good because if he tried anything on with his sister she would beat the cr@p out of him.

chris - still being bullied by your visitors? Stand up to them man - they are small defenceless animals - apart from my Princess Merlin who has massive paws armed with sharp claws.

I think Chris is right. My cats and my neighbours' cats are interchangeable. One moves next door when we go on holiday.

Thanks everyone....i'll show this thread to my daughter.

I was talking to my wife last night about getting him a disc with my phone number on. Trouble is, he's always losing his collar...we've had 3 this year alone.

Ive got a feeling someone's feeding him and keeping him in their homes....he stunk of perfume yesterday.

Anyway, he went out again last night so we probably won't see him for a while again.

Many thanks

Hi Hammerman
It might be worth getting him microchipped if he is going missing for a long time (or maybe you've already done that?) One of our felines disappears for long periods and I know how upsetting it can be.
Good luck,
best wishes, Maz
Have you got him chipped?
