What do wolves eat?

17:19 on Fri 11/Feb/05 I have just been telling a friend that wolves are not strictly carnivourous, although her web site says they can't digest veg stuff. Who is right?

(19:08 on Fri 11/Feb/05) As Loosehead states, wolves are carnivores, but they do eat insects and berries on occasion.  With the re-introduction of wolves in our western U.S. state, I watched two wolves in a meadow last fall, during an elk hunt, acting strangely.  On further inspection through a telescope, it was apparent they were eating many grasshoppers that were infesting the meadow...

Thank you Loosehead and Clanad. So I can safely say that although they are carnivores they can and do digest other foods.

(21:22 on Sun 13/Feb/05) Dogs are technically omnivores - they can eat and digest meat *and* other foods - wheras cats are true carnivores and can only survive on a meat or meat-based diet.

You are so lucky clanad!! When I am on holiday in Sweden I always try to sit very still somewhere quiet to see an elk, I am now convinced they don't actually exist and it is all a big conspiracy against me. This summer when I was in Sweden they said a bear had wandered down from the north, did I see it? NO! (well that was a long shot anyway, I still believe in bears) And I would absolutly love to see some wolves, in my opinion they are some of the most beautiful creatures. Were there much uproar when they reintroduced them? A couple of years ago a pack of wolves crossed the Danish/German border and they were all shot :(


Sorry for this pointless post fern, just had to get my jealousy out... ;)
