The only ones I know of is if the bird actually flies indoors. I believe this mean there will be a death in the family. And a solo magpie must be saluted as one is bad luck. And finally a robin redbreast is a sign of luck. Tapping on your window, I owuld take as a sign of good fortune as I know of no such folklore. If in doubt, be positive!!! |

You may find this song by The Beach Boys of interest. It's all about a bird comining to a window. http://youtube.com/watch?v=bL-_fMxIge0 Birds fly up And down spinnin' round Flyin' all around From my window A little brown sparraw came Flutterin' down Le moineau est venu Se poser ma fenjtre He came to my window And as I watched him I found myself reelin' and turnin' around And the faster I ran I ran out of breath and I fell to the ground (Poof) Ahhhhhhhhhhhh He came to my window He came to my window He came to my window From their eyes The people must look like miniature toys Do do do do do Do do do do do do Fly away Fly away Fly away |

He might be reminding you to put out some food... Forget omens, the usual reason is that a bird will see its reflection and 'attack' the window imagining it to be a rival... or digging around the glass and frame for choice insects - lots of larvae this time of year. |

I'm with Cetti, forget the omens.... if I observed every bird superstition I'd be a wreck!

(18:28 on Mon 26/Nov/07) We had a crow attacking our window around 6am every morning for weeks. On the advice of a fellow Aber we bought some bird silhouettes from the RSPB and stuck them on the window. The lady in the RSPB shop told us birds quite often attack windows as they think their reflection is another bird as Cetti mentions. It worked for us but I believe a neighbour is now having the same problem.

Hi Joe, I really wouldn't worry about it being an omen either. We often hear 'knocking' at our patio doors too! The birds cling on to the wood of a pane & peck away hoping to find little mites to nibble - even though there's plenty of food in the feeders for them to enjoy! This might be helpful: http://www.uksafari.com/birds2.htm |

(19:12 on Mon 26/Nov/07) Meant to say - we've had birds fly into our windows too which can be a bit distressing for us to see & hear, but they soon seem to recover, thankfully.

(20:33 on Mon 26/Nov/07) On a side issue one magpie isn't actually bad luck. The saying is "one for sorrrow..." this is because magpies have the same partner for life and if you see one by itself it usually means the oher partner has been killed

(21:33 on Mon 26/Nov/07) I have a friend who has to put socks on his cars mirrors because a little bird kept attacking them thinking it was a rival. |
