I just know you bright sparks will solve this problem.

My water troughs are freezing (water for horses) I've tried putting balls in but the horses just remove them, and they freeze again before morning. The ice is about an inch thick.

Hi, how big a ball are you using? Try a basket ball....wold have thought even a Shire horse would have trouble picking one of them up!!!!!

Friend of mine used to use cheap, children's beach balls, about football sized or slightly smaller. Her dad owned a riding school and kept dozens of horses and ponies, and it always worked.
We sell balls on ropes (dog toys) - perhaps you could anchor the rope so the neds can't remove them?
