Further to my "cat soup" thread...just why *do* cats leave the meaty bits? (or what passes for meat) Every owner will say the same...the gravy/jelly gets gobbled up,the rest dries up. Is it something in the food...a cunning plan by the manufacturers to make us buy more? I know enough studies are done to determine what cats...and dogs...will eat.

Because they are picky rat-bags.

First thing I'd do if a pet left solids was check if their mouth was healthy and not sore , including teeth/gums.

If all fine then , they're just being faddy or lazy.
Our cat also does this. Mashing the 'meat' in to the gravy/jelly gets him eating it.
My cat does this as well. If it is a meat product she likes she eats it but if it is the cheaper one she licks the gravey and goes. We give her dry biscuits now but even then she picks out the ones she likes.
My cat has always licked the gravy or jelly first. He always eats his dry food though.
Most of our cats lick the gravy or jelly off first, a couple then eat the meat, a couple go back to the meat later. We feed dried food most of the time and several of them will only eat the smaller varieties. I think it's laziness!

I have to give Minnie a powder mixed into her food, since she was ill. I'm only giving her meat with gravy in the evening, so I mix it with that - she still licks off the gravy and leaves the meat. Mornings I give her biscuit which she munches happily - so I conclude that she is just a picky little madam!

Our cats did the same. I gave them pilchards in tomato sauce once when I ran out of cat food. They licked off all the sauce and left the pilchards!
