I thought the sparrows were nesting early last year, but they are already back in the old nesting spot today. I'm always glad to see them, but I wonder if they can possibly find enough food for themselves yet, let alone nestlings.

They won't start nesting yet though, will they ? I have a small flock of sparrows who have been feeding in my small garden for months now. I love them!
I haven't had a sparrow in my garden for over three years :-( That's why I've put a sparrow nest box in my eaves, hopefully it'll be successful :-)
Could be they've found a good place for a winter roost and they're all snuggling up together to keep warm.
put out some grain for them and it should pay dividends.
They have become scarce in many places, so treasure what you have.
good luck.

They are in the end of a high gutter, where sparrows have nested for at least the last five years.
