Is there any way you can prevent/minimise spiders from coming into the house. I have heard about putting conkers by windows etc.

Become a fanatical vacuum cleaner. All bugs hate it.
They do no harm, let them live.
Honestly?

No.

The majority of the spiders you will see at this time of year are not coming in, they are already in!

They are house spiders which live their lives in your house, and their offspring will do the same.

You will only see them as they make their way around the house, usually unnoticed.

This time of year you will see males because it's mating time, and they are looking for females - but it's only a few weeks a year, and then things go back to normal.

I do sympathise, I hate them - but there is no way of eliminating them so your best solution is to learn to ignore them.

They do eat all sorts of creepies, and they do no harm, so when possible just ignore them.

Andy posts this every year and some of it is just not true. Large house spiders do indeed come in, particularly September to look for a mate. a lot of the summer they are outside. They also come in when it's going to rain. This is a well known fact. There is absolutely no way half a dozen large house spiders are wandering round my house all year just to appear for a couple of weeks.
The conkers thing has been proved to not work, but some swear by them. Don't think the sprays help much either. keep the windows shut in autumn, get a cat :-) let those on here who just don't understand tell you how harmless they are, what pet names they've given their's etc etc and just ignore it.
If you wish to live and thrive let the spider run alive

Thanks, but I'm scared that one will crawl into my ear or something when i'm asleep or bite me. I understand they are part of nature and have a place but I can't help my fear

Prudie, can you tell us why they are dangerous?
I have to keep my bedroom windows shut at night for fear of spiders getting in and crawling in my bed!!!! I like spiders but can't have one near me.
Spider webs fascinate me, añd love to see their intricate webs out in the garden.

trt of course they're not dangerous and by asking that you are just compounding my point about those who don't understand.

But if they make you scared and tense, throw them over the neighbour's fence.
Size 9 boots
and if they make you cry and wail
give 'em a thwack with the Daily Mail
I truly am a mardy 'un...

Thank you and goodnight!
Spiders are beneficial inhabitants of any garden or home because of their important contributions to biological control of pest insects. Spiders are considered to be the most important terrestrial predators, eating tons of pest insects or other small arthropods every year. Spiders are generalist predators that are willing to eat almost any insect they can catch. They are abundant and found in most habitats. They only need to be left alone!
(Forgive cut and paste but sums up my feelings)
There are no bugs in my bath
There could be bugs in your bath without them! Put plug in.
