My Maltese is 2wks post op for an ACL repair. She is currently being crated (large one) for complete rest. I took two weeks holiday to care for her after her op and return to work next week. I only work 4 hours (pm) but with travel etc she will be alone for 5hrs (max). I have NEVER left her that long alone in a crate, she usually has free run of the flat. Do you think she will be ok in the crate on her own for that long?

My personal opinion is that I would never leave my dog alone in a crate but others may come along and advise otherwise. So in answer to your question - no.
Yes perfectIy fine - I bet she sIeeps Ionger than that in it during the night anyway. Far better to crate her and get her back to fuII heaIth than risk Ieaving her Iose to do more damage.

Thank you for your responses. I just want her to be calm and safe so I think I will opt for her to be crated. I would hate for her to undo the excellent work that her vet has achieved and have to go through more pain and discomfort.
Could you also leave a radio on for her as some background noise ?
dawny just basing my opinion on a case when a dog was left alone in a crate and severely hurt itself - had someone been around then it could have been helped.
