Cats do it to make themselves vomit up hairballs, maybe dogs do it for similar reasons.
My boy does it with new long grass quite often, in fact he seems to graze at times, but never make himself sick. I don't know why he does it apart from it must be the BULLterrier in him. Doesn't seem to do him any harm though!
I think dogs do it simply because they like it. Mine has been heading straight for the new grass on her walks lately.
My boy's Cocker does this with no apparent ill effects.
My little dog used to graze on soft couch grass and was never sick. He died a year ago and this year my garden is full of the stuff in between the plants, I never realised how well he kept it down! :o)
Mine plead guilty and it doesn't do any harm, tho' it sometimes causes a little difficulty at the other end as it isn't digested.

Isla eats grass sometimes, occasionally she is sick after doing so, but I think that she mainly gets pleasure from it.
don't know about cats but have always believed dogs do it because their stomachs are giving them trouble.
Howard's theory is popular, but I don't think there is a simple answer. Six of mine are doing it with new grass but none of them have any stomach upset or need worming They just enjoy it, carefully picking the freshest and youngest shoots. The three wolfhounds don't seem to bother, but they have their own preferences. The old one, in particular, has been known to pick out particular plants which the herbal says are beneficial in aiding digestion, so maybe she knows someting which our ancestors knew.
