my oh got a shock today, when he went to an old rabbit hutch that we had stored the garden netting in, he pulled out a length of netting and out fell four tiny black kittens, about a week old i would think as their eyes are still shut, we have dogs but no cats and i had been chasing off this little black cat that i was afraid was killing the baby birds, now i feel so guilty, i never dreamed she had a litter, even when i saw her eating stale bread that i put out for the birds, so now i think she must be a stray and was so hungry, what we have done so far is of course put the kits back where we found them and leave some dog meat and chicken bits out for the mum, what i wonder though, will we become responsible for her now we have fed her? assuming she does'nt move them now they have been found what do we do about the kits?
Look after her, give her food and leave her alone to care for her babies. In the meantime, contact a local animal welfare charity and tell them what's going on. Brilliant of you to care for her, so many people would just ignore the problem. Well done you.
I have always found Cats Protection to be a very helpful charity. The babies will need regular feeds from mum so it might be worth getting in touch with them.
Please please please leave out loads of food for her, poor thing must be starving with all those mouths to feed. Then I second what Wolf said, find a local cat rescue who will come and get them.....
Best to give her kitten food as she needs the extra protein to make milk and build herself back up.
You should get in touch with the rescue charities asap because the kittens will become feral if not 'socialised'.
Well done.
If the mother doesnt come back they wont survive on their own for very long, and certainly not overnight. If you have put some food out that she hasnt eaten or you havnt seen her there at all today you may need to ring the CPL for help.
thanks for your concern everyone, the cat moved three of the kits in the night, the cats home has got the fourth one that she left behind, we are doing our best but if we can't find where she has moved them to there's nothing else we can do, i have left some food out as she knows where to find it now, and i will tell all the neihbours to look out for her.
