Insect That Hovers Like A Humming Bird

Hi,

I have just been watching an insect which is about the size of a hornet. It has a long tube from its mouth to collect nectar, and it hovers like a humming bird. It is a brown colour with white and red spotting marking on its tail end. What on earth is it?
