Cat With Low Potassium Level

Any help gratefully received. Our 18 year old cat has been diagnosed with a low potassium level. Kidney levels are normal as is thyroid. Suddenly started walking with head dropped down. Now on potassium supplements but still none the wiser why. Has anyone else expreienced this?
