Poorly king charles spaniel

My friend has a king charles spaniel and last night his back end went. He didnt fall or have any accident, this just happened. He was taken to the vet who did some replex tests but there was no reaction and has no feeling in his legs and cant pass his motions.. The vet thinks it could be a plolapsed disc but needs to operate as it doesnt show up on an xray. Has anyone had this happen to them and also has anyone got any other ideas of what it could be. The dog is only 2yrs old and it fit and healthy. Could this be a tempory thing or can he recover?
Many thanks

There are some dog lovers on here, wanda - hopefully someone will answer, this doesn't sound a good situation.

I do hope someone can help.....
If it is a prolapsed disc, I think there is a good chance of a recovery. Get your friend to ask the vet of the options available, as I understand physio and/or acupuncture has seen some good results. Good luck.
friends mums little dog lost use and feeling in his back end xrays didnt show up anything and because of his age vet felt it better to call it a day , but she would not have this and took him home over the next few weeks she coped with the mess and massaged and worked his little legs the feeling came back and he is fine again now, also had this happen to a cat of ours that was hit by a car no feeling at all in her back end ,but brought her home and persevered with exercising her legs , feeling never came back 100% but plenty enough for her to scamper about the garden and catch mice she lived on for another 11 years
Many years ago a relatives Cavalier King Charles had this happen when it was about the same age. As far as I remember she had an op to fuse a couple of the vertibrae but recovered well despite walking a bit stiffly afterwards. She got to live for another 7 or 8 years.
Does he have any other symptoms, has he been trying to scratch round his neck area? Paralysis can be one symptom of syringomyelia, which is a problem in Cavaliers but this is usually noticed when they keep trying to scratch, and start to fall over as they use their back leg to scratch. If it is just a disc then the prognosis is good, and surgery is usually successful.
