BP Oil disaster

I'm not very knowledgable on things like this, so can anybody explain it to me please, why can't BP just stop the flow of oil at source till the pipe has been fixed? Thanks in advance :)

The source is a gazillion gallon reserve about 5 miles below the ocean bed. Comprende?
As above. And no tap to turn off. Oh, and the automatic valve which is supposed to close in emergency has failed to work.
