Very witty..but I expect you are right.
Probably getting ready for breeding usually around Feb. It's about the only time they tolerate other moles in their territory. Surprisingly what seems like a large area of activity can be just a single mole.
When the weather turns cold, worms go deep to avoid it - so the moles follow them down. With warmer temperatures, the worms come back toward the surface, and so do the moles. That's how they suddenly seem to appear.
