How can i get rid of a plague of giant flying cockroaches from my home?

A housemate who was quite secluded and a bit of a loner has just moved out and left a plastic tub in the cupboard which my friend when we was cleaning the room unfortunately found when she opened it and hundreds came rcrawling and flying out, she screamed, has left the house and refuses to come back and i have sealed the door with duct tape but will be too scared to sleep, use the toilet or eat here until they've gone.
We don't have money for a pest controller as we're struggling students and the type is similar to that one in my link but around 4 inches long.
What can i do to get rid of all of them asap?

More incredible.
No, bug bombs don't explode! I'm in the UK, they aren't illegal!
Oh, she's gone!
Now that is truly incredible! (oxymoron)
You can get sulphur candles in garden centres and DIY shops. They produce sulphur dioxide gas which is lethal to most if not all creatures. They are used to kill off woodworm infestations. You will need to vacate the premises as the gas is very penetrating an very very acrid.
The gas is not explosive. You could light the candle in the room take off the tape from the door and leg it, shutting the room door behind you. It is the cheapest option and stands a good chance of working if you follow the instructions.
It's incredible that this thread is still here.
