Hi,it should state in your contract how much notice you should give.Hand in a written letter and work out your notice. If you mean you dont want to go back to work for Tescos ,im not sure but I think you may lose any monies owing and it wont look good when your new firm asks for a reference..!Remember "every little helps" (:O)

You found another job while off sick?
Can't have been that ill then?
If you are signed off sick then you can just write to them handing in your required notice. Any further period of continuous sickness will count in your notice, i.e. if you are signed off for another four weeks and you give four weeks notice you will not have to return to work and they will still have to pay you (if you are getting paid whilst you are sick).
ie. You don't have to wait until you are fit to go back to work and then hand in your required notice.
Very unfair another-view. We don't know the circumstances of aaronfraser's sickness or the new job offer.
I hope you enjoy your new job Aaron.

They will question why you were off sick but still actively looking for other work.
You can still actively look for work in newspapers, etc. whilst you are off sick. Nothing can stop you, anyway how do we know that aaron hasn't been approached by his prospective new employer.

They can question (I presume you mean Tescos) as much as they like but they can't do much about it!!

thats a tuff one there
sorry i want to help but i dont know what to say

I can assure you I have done it - given my notice in whilst off sick, been paid for my notice period and never gone back to that employer. Most large employers are quite used to this.
I did not say it was not permitted, just purely frowned upon. I am sure your boss will question you about it. But as you and others have said, there is not much he/she can do about it.
Be wary as this may come up in you reference, as will your sick leave if it due to stress. Being signed off sick stays on fuile and your next employer will be advised. A friend in HR told me this.
Good luck with your new role!

I'm sure his new employer will be happy that he's just been on the sick for 3months+. I know that would make me hire him(!)
As I said before, you don't know the circumstances, so your comments are unfair.
He may be off sick with a condition that stops him doing his job at Tesco and applying for jobs he can do with that condition.
It is easy to jump to conclusions.
I will wait and see his response.
Agreed Ethel. People are quick to criticise and pass judgement without knowing the facts.

The point is another view that you haven't answered aaron's question. What you think about the situation doesn't really matter. He wasn't inviting comments about the rights and wrongs of the matter. He was asking for advice! Why should he respond to your comments?
Ok then. My advice is for him to contact his boss and hand his notice in.
They will probably be glad to get rid of someone with such a horrendous sickness record and can employ someone more reliable to do his job, which others will have had to do in his absence.

You are such an understanding and thoughtful person another view!! You have no idea why aaron has been off sick, or of his circumstances. I can only hope that you remain healthy all your working life and never have any problems. I feel sorry for your colleagues if they are sick and have such a workmate such as you.
I have had to have several long periods of sickness leave during some of my working life, but unlike some I have worked when I can and never resorted to invalidity benefits (which I could have got). We are not all blessed with good health and many of us that have problems do our very best.
I am really glad the majority of people have more understanding and are more realistic than you are. I can only assume that you are very young with no experience of life. If I am wrong then I feel very sad that you have such a blinkered attitude.

Which is why I was interested in hearing his response.
The guy could have saved his company a lot of bother by just jacking in instead of pretending to be sick for quarter of a year.
'pretending' eh. Of course you know that. You are obviously just winding me up now, somewhat successfully, so cheerio!!

So if you have a broken limb you can't
work ..and if it's not healed right you can't
return to a heavy job ..so the next option is
a desk job ...
